This Chinese year, the Year of the Monkey, is an auspicious one for dispute settlement practitioners.

The mischievous monkey is known for stirring up disputes. So what more auspicious setting for the GAR Awards than Shanghai – at a time when the city is opening up a new freezone that includes international arbitration institutions?

We were also glad to be back in Asia – where we held our very first GAR Awards in Seoul in 2011 – after a four-year absence during which we held the event in Stockholm, Bogota, Paris and Washington, DC.

The awards took place at the Mandarin Oriental Pudong, in Shanghai’s business district, and included the unveiling of this year’s GAR 30 – this year led by two firms jointly for the first time.
